History of The YMCA in Halifax

The Halifax YMCA was founded 156 years ago by Samuel Cunard, a civic and business leader.  The first YMCA was located on Barrington Street.

In 1951 Your YMCA moved from its Barrington Street location to its current address on South Park Street.  This facility was constructed and designed to address the needs of the post war era including housing for veterans, social spaces, a chapel and auditorium as well as special features such as the pool and a bowling alley.

Over the decades, YMCA volunteers and staff have worked with the community to identify and deliver relevant programs and services as needs change from year to year and decade to decade.

As in the case of other long standing community institutions, Your YMCA has had to continually reinvent itself to ensure continued relevance in serving the community and addressing emerging societal needs. The evolution included critical ongoing investment in the facilities and equipment needed to provide relevant and modern community programs and services. This capital investment was critical in ensuring that YMCA facilities remained current, accessible and reflected the expectations of citizens and society.
