The Journey so far...
Your YMCA has been working on a renewal plan for serving Peninsular Halifax for the past three years. Here is what we have been doing:
2006 – Program and Service Scan- A survey of current operators and providers of community programs in the peninsula confirmed that Your YMCA remains a relevant provider of health and wellness programming for this region of the municipality.
- 2007 - Market Research
- Confirmed that a sustainable operating business model is possible for a new community centre that focuses on health, wellness and active living for citizens of all ages who live, learn, work and play in Peninsular Halifax.
- 2007 – Site Selection
- With no preconceived notions of where we might end up, we entered into conversations with other public institutions that were concurrently in various stages of development for the future. We investigated various green space options. These dialogues and research confirmed that our current location on South Park Street met the market criteria, and based on current ownership, allowed the best opportunity to proceed in a timely manner.
- 2008 – CBC/Radio-Canada Partnership
- Based on the critical nature of the aging building structures of both Your YMCA and CBC/Radio-Canada, these two organizations have formed a partnership and have taken a collaborative approach to developing this prime location as a joint development. Over the past few years, CBC/Radio-Canada has been evaluating various scenarios to have all of its staff and operations integrated in the same building in Halifax. This joint development represents one of the possible locations that CBC/Radio-Canada is considering to house its operations and to fulfill its mission as a public broadcaster. This partnership includes the idea of appointing a joint development partner/contractor to build the actual development.
- 2009 – Stakeholder Engagement
- YMCA Volunteers and Staff have been proactively seeking feedback from key stakeholders and stakeholder groups in the community to help identify potential opportunities as we move this project forward. We are excited to now be looking for feedback from our broader group of stakeholders utilizing this website as a means to communicate and update on the evolution of the YMCA renewal project. CBC/Radio-Canada and Your YMCA are excited to be talking to our neighbours about how to preserve a charity and CBC/Radio-Canada, while creating a new legacy for this location that truly is located at the heart of our city.
- Today – Development Application Submission
- CBC/Radio-Canada and Your YMCA will be submitting this joint development application to HRM. Should the project proceed with approval, a private developer will be sought who can make the construction of a new YMCA a reality.
