Project Design Principles
Designing your new YMCA Centre of Community will incorporate the following principles:
- Excellence in Design
- The corner of South Park St and Sackville St is one of the most prominent locations in Peninsular Halifax. It features adjacencies to green spaces, the historical overtones of Citadel Hill, the changing landscapes and reflective spaces of the Public Gardens, the pedestrian pathway to the vibrant and bustling shopping avenue of Spring Garden Road, the artery that daily moves thousands of people into the vibrant business and health care districts of our province. The excellence in design of the building at this prominent corner is very important and must be treated as such.
- A Place for All to Gather
- Renewing this prominent corner through the reinvestment of a YMCA will bring access, activity and light to this corner seven days a week from early morning until late at night. A new indoor “extension of the streetscape” will be created via a naturally lit public atrium to be positioned within the development. New spaces will be created in which the community can gather in inclement weather, hold community events or simply enjoy their neighbourhood.
- Creative Green Urban Design
- Utilizing sustainability as the underpinning to the development, through building design the joint project will strive to reduce resource and energy consumption with attention to being environmentally responsible.
- Add to Inventory of Community Assets
- Bring enhanced public good and community benefits to the citizens through renewal of two significant iconic institutions while respecting an historic neighbourhood.
